AFL Victoria in conjunction with the Northern Football League and the Montmorency Football Club held a Responsible Gambling luncheon on Saturday May 30th at Montmorency v Eltham as part of the Responsible Gambling Awareness Week.
The luncheon was a resounding success and was attended by representatives from the Department of Justice, AFL Victoria, the NFL Board and Administration, Local Councils, members of the Responsible Gambling Awareness Week Committee and, obviously, members of both particiating clubs and other clubs.
Angela Pippos from Sport927 hosted the luncheon, while Sam Soliman (Boxing), David Zaharakis (Essendon Football Club) and Sharelle McMahon (Australian Diamonds' & Melbourne Vixens' Netball Captain) were special guests who assisted in helping deliver the message.
Some of the messages they delivered were:
Set a limit and don't exceed it
Take just your allocated amount of money
Gamble for the fun of it, not the money or the win
Don't let gambling take over your life
Other messages delivered at the luncheon were:
The responsible gambler doesn't:
Let the game play them
Is in control
Sees gambling as entertainment, not a job
Doesn't take gambling too seriously
Only gambles with money set aside for entertainment, never with money for rent or food
Never borrows money to gamble, either from friends, money set aside for other things, or credit cards
Sets limits on the amount of time and money they will spend
Sticks to these limits and walks away when they are reached
Recognises that you can't win in the long run and doesn't try and chase a win
Is relaxed and sociable
Is aware of family and friends
Is happy to take frequent breaks
