RESEARCH JUNIOR FOOTBALL CLUB

It was mid-afternoon, Sunday August 16 2015 when the inaugural Research Junior Football Club Under-12 Girls team proudly held the NFL premiership cup high, but to get to this point, let’s step back in time.

After an extensive recruitment program over summer, a small band of girls began training on the beautiful playing fields of Eltham’s Catholic Ladies College, alongside the Under-13 boys, who had won their premiership six months earlier.

The boys assisted the girls with their training drills, constantly encouraged, and enjoyed their company. A committed and experienced group of coaches also ensured the girls enjoyed themselves each night which, in turn, saw them tell their friends.

Numbers began to swell and on March 16 the team had its first practice match on the intimate Research Park, which we regard as the best viewing ground for junior footy in the league. With Research known as “The Family Club”, as expected there was a large crowd to cheer on the girls, who stumbled their way through the game and had plenty of laughs, but importantly got their first taste of competitive footy.

After a few more warm-up games the real stuff started and the Research Under-12 Girls were set for a big season of fun and footy. As the fixture progressed, and word spread, more girls joined the team, and the on-field progress began, until that successful day in August.

The 2015 premiership flag now hangs proudly in the Research clubrooms, which in 2016 will undergo outstanding renovations thanks to a handsome Government grant and extensive Club fundraising.

On the back of the girls success accolades were forthcoming with the presentation of a Federal Award for Outstanding Achievement and Contribution to Community Sport in Jaga Jaga, and a comprehensive congratulatory message tabled in State Parliament from Vicky Ward MP.

In keeping with Australia’s record growth in female football, the club is now embarking on an even greater presence in the NFL by fielding girls teams in the NFL Under-12, 14, and 16 age groups in 2016.

We are keen to have any interested players contact the Club. No experience is needed, just a willingness to listen, learn, have fun, get fit, and meet new friends.

The Research Junior Football Club is a progressive club that moves with the times, is encouraging and nurturing to its players, and welcoming to their parents and families, some of the many reasons it was named NFL Junior Club of the Year in 2014.

The Club looks outside the square by not only training and playing footy but through team outings, activities and weekly family BBQ’s.

Player development is of paramount importance with specialist programs to build confidence and ability, a structured rotational policy, and to ensure that each group plays as a team non-reliant on star players, but as a cohesive unit.

The Coaches themselves are also given extra assistance in their roles with the introduction of the RJFC “Coach of the Coaches Program”, which sees a highly credentialed coach assisting team coaches with their needs and advice.

On a per capita basis, Research Junior Football Club is a highly successful Club. Whilst most NFL teams have several groups in each age group, in 2015 of our 8 age groups eligible for finals, 6 made it to finals, 5 played grand finals, and 3 won the premiership.

Research has a well established and run Auskick Program, helping tackers progress to our Under-9s group. It fields teams in every age group up to Under-17s, and players are then welcome to join the senior affiliate NFL team Lower Plenty, who are more than generous with their time in helping and guiding Research junior players.

In short, it’s hard to find a reason to go past Research Junior Football Club as the place to play footy, and we look forward to welcoming all new and returning players for season 2016, especially girls interested in our Under-12, 14 and 16 groups.

Additional information can be found at the club’s website www.researchjuniorfc.com.au or by phoning the club secretary on 0417 844 493.
