Bears Get a Dose of the Blues

The Blues came out fast and furious in the first quarter, proving why they are one of the top four teams in the division. Lower Plenty struggled to get possession of the ball, ultimately causing them to only score three points for the entire quarter, to Epping’s seven goals.  Epping were making better use of the space in the mid field, and were showing more pace in offence. They were quick with their hands and kicking effectively to place it on the chests of their forwards.

Aaron Willitts from the Epping side was dominant and proving to be a problem for the Lower Plenty backline. He was a real focal point for Epping when they went into attack, scoring three of his five goals for the match in the first quarter.

The ruck contests were quite even, however Epping’s midfield were superior on the day creating more opportunities for their forwards.

Lower Plenty’s task was made all the more difficult by their slow start to the game and inaccurate kicking. Their determination and on-ball-skills improved as the game progressed, Andy Knee began to impose himself on the game taking marks and creating opportunities for his team mates.

The three quarter time break saw Epping 16.10.106 to Lower Plenty 8.10.58. Many would have thought that the game was well and truly over, but strong words from coach Wayne Harmes to his Bears saw them lift their work rate. Billy Barden became a force to be reckoned with, kicking the first two goals of the final term. The Bears determination and desire saw the ball inside their forward 50 for most of the final quarter. Epping were forced to crowd their backline as the Bears mounted a spirited come back.

Both coaches have reasons for concern. Epping’s final quarter fade out would not want to become a habit if they are to be a serious finals contender, and the Bears cannot afford to give sides above them on the ladder such a head start. Epping took out the win 17.11.113 to Lower Plenty’s 13.15.93.

Epping best: Aaron Willitts (1), Peter Little (16), Daniel Moore (11) and Matthew Garland (7).

Lower Plenty best: Andy Knee (2), Billy Barden (19), Mitchell Skelly (93) and Leigh McTaggart (47).
